I think it would be a good idea if films carried a rating for strangeness. This would allow people who don’t like weird movies to give them a miss.

I’d still give them a try, on the whole. But there will be those who are attracted to any Scarlett Johansson film who wonder what this one is all about.

I knew from advance publicity that she is an alien, travelling about in Scotland, chatting to ordinary males and luring them to a strange doom. The worst fate for some of them is sinking below a shiny surface into what looks like a smooth jelly, while Laura (Scarlett) walks backwards, disrobing.

I liked the Scottishness of it all, familiar scenes including Glasgow and recognisable characters. One of the men going under is a Hibs fan.

Scarlett doesn’t say much, though her chat-ups are quite plausible, as is the fact that the men go with her. The scenes tend to be sharply cut so you are not always sure of the conclusion of everything.

Even though she is clearly doing the men little good in the long run, she isn’t confident in her surroundings. At times she looks lost, and she vomits over a black forest gateau.

Because it is so well publicised that she is an alien, the ending won’t be a complete surprise.

If you don’t like weirdness, don’t see it. If you are happy to let it flow over you and see what sticks, give it a try.
