| Donna (Jenny Slate) has a life of sorts as a stand-up comic and a bookshop worker (Unoppressive Non-Imperialst Books), but even that starts to unravel.
Her boyfriend has been getting too chummy with her friend, and he dumps her after she makes him the butt of some of her jokes one night. She is devastated, and it gets worse when her boss says the bookshop is closing, the shop owners are chucking them out.
Drowning her sorrows, she meets Mark, a nice sort of guy, and has a one-night stand. On top of all her woes, now she is pregnant.
She has her mum (a professor) and dad (less bright) who live apart, plus a gay friend who runs the club she appears at, and a female room mate. Even the standup goes awry as her normal method of pouring out her life at that moment leads her to bore the audience with news of her imminent abortion.
How can she sort this lot out?
It’s a terrific performance by Jenny Slate, a new name to me, and I’ll be watching out for her in future. She’s charming and funny. Everyone and everything else slots in around her central character. Director Robespierre will be worth watching also.
The most enjoyable comedy-drama I’ve seen this year.
