I had already read the strange story of John du Pont and the Schultz brothers before seeing this film, but even so it was a gripping watch. I also knew beforehand that Steve Carell played du Pont, though I would not have recognised him.

Du Pont was a very strange man so there can be no complaints that it is a strange portrayal, well out of the usual Carrell mould. He looks very odd with a nose which doesn’t seem to fit, and staring eyes, but nevertheless it is a haunting performance. Although Du Pont sponsors and befriends the US Wrestling team, especially Mark and Dave Schultz, he is not a man in whose company anyone could feel comfortable.

Mark Schultz (Channing Tatum) moves into the du Pont estate first to prepare for World and Olympic events, and initially goes along with du Pont in return for his generosity. He puts up with the late night visits, and even the older man’s participation in veteran wrestling (though it looks like the other wrestlers let him win).

Family man Dave Schultz (Mark Ruffalo) isn’t initially interested in any involvement, but eventually accepts a post as a trainer. Tensions now run three ways between the brothers and the sponsor.

Du Pont, from America’s wealthiest family, is in awe of his mother but doesn’t seem to contribute to the family wealth himself. He wants to see himself as a leader of men though clearly he has little ability to relate to others.

Disastrously, Mark Schultz accepts an offer of cocaine from Du Pont one day, and in addition to the uncomfortable relationships, it is the start of his decline. Things can only deteriorate and if you know the story, you will know how far.

It’s a tragic tale but with Mark Schultz involved in the production, we’d have to assume it is not inaccurate.
