The Gift
Genre : Thriller
Year : 2015
Director : Joel Edgerton
Screenplay : Joel Edgerton
Starring : Jason Bateman, Rebecca Hall, Joel Edgerton

This is a good, slow-burning suspense movie with, to my mind, a slightly over-the-top indefinite ending which didn’t quite work. However I enjoyed it along the way.

Newly married Simon (Jason Bateman) and Robyn (Rebecca Hall) are moving into their desireable new home, with Simon a budding high-flier at work and Robyn having apparently suspended her career, with some troubles suggested in her past.

While shopping there are accosted by a slightly-creepy looking stranger who turns out to be Gordo (Joel Edgerton) who reminds Simon that they were at school together. Simon says he doesn’t remember. However Gordo is keen to be friends, a bit too keen probably, and pops round to the house with gifts (even though they didn’t recall saying where they lived).

So what’s up? It looks like Gordo might be a stalker, and though the couple try to end the relationship, Robyn is still haunted by concerns. She is not enjoying being alone in the house. Simon does remember Gordo, after all, they used to call him Gordo the Wierdo.

Throughout all this, the couple’s own relationship doesn’t seem quite right. Jason Bateman does a good job of making Simon not too likeable, and there might be secrets in his past.

The frights are more suggested than visible, like all the best suspense films, but as I said I thought the ending was a bit too contrived though quite a clever idea. Hopefully that’s not a spoiler.
