Paterson is a bus driver, ex-military, and he lives in Paterson New Jersey.
He has a loving wife Laura who likes everything around her to be black and white, and a small bulldog-type dog Marvin who he walks on his evening trips to a local bar.
We join Paterson each day, starting between 6am and 6:30, for much the same routine and yet with small incidents which make each day different. He is a quiet, observant fellow and he likes to write poetry in his small notebook, simple but pleasant. He is friendly with everyone, and everyone is friendly with him – the barman Doc, his depressed fellow driver Donny who always had his woes (different each day), and the splitting-up couple Marie and Everett. Even a car-full of youngsters playing loud music, who might be looking for trouble in a different film, just want to admire his dog.
Even when something quite bad happens towards the end of the film, Paterson’s mood changes only a little.
For those who like their drama high-powered, this probably won’t strike a chord. Some might wonder how anyone could justify such an uneventful film. However I loved it and could not wait to see what was going to happen next. I hoped there would not be anything too dramatic. I loved the dog, and the wife, and Paterson. I’d love to come across him for a quiet chat.
